Tiger Cubs at Save China’s Tigers

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

A month ago, two tigers were born as part of the Save China’s Tigers (SCT) breeding project in South Africa. They were born under natural conditions without human intervention or observation.

The cubs’ arrival is especially important as they are among a very limited number of South China tigers. According to Li Quan, founder of SCT, “[The cubs' birth] is another important step in our rewilding and breeding project and a major achievement in tiger conservation history.” There are only 76 South China tigers in captivity and possibly as few as 30 in the wild.

Deep Sea Angler Fish

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

The deep sea angler fish is a very fascinating creature. In the dark environment of the deep sea, the fish uses lures filled with bacteria that create light and attract prey.  Furthermore, the female, which is substantially larger than the male, uses flashing lures to attract a mate.  The male will then attach itself to the female and becomes absorbed into her body.

For more information on the angler fish, you may be interested in the BBC documentary, The Blue Planet – Seas of Life (Part 2).
