Giant Panda Habitat Lost
An earthquake in the Sichuan region of China last May caused horrific damage. Nearly 69,000 people died and millions were left homeless. Affected too were giant pandas. Roughly 23 percent of the giant panda habitat was destroyed, and a large portion of the remaining habitat was fragmented. The loss affects 60 percent of the wild giant panda population, putting this endangered species even more at risk.

Dear CNN: The article on the reduction of Panda habitat as a result of the
Sichuan earthquake did not mention that the reason the forests were denuded of vegetation was due to massive LANDSLIDES, triggered by the earthquake.
I visited the area in July 2008, shortly after the earthquake and observed that many of the mountain slopes in the area had experienced landslides that took down entire swaths of vegetation.
